Chapter Ten
After a long, exhausting day, I was tempted to go to bed early. Instead, I pulled out my laptop, hoping to do some online research into Coraâs death. Iâd just changed out of my work clothes and into a baggy T-shirt and comfortable pair of sweats when I heard a knock on the door.
I hadnât been expecting visitors and was surprised to find Shawna and Jade standing outside, similarly dressed in dark jackets and jeans. The only difference in their attire was the worn lime green backpack Shawna had hitched on her shoulder. A bag sheâd gotten when she was twelve years old and had used to carry her books all the way through high school.
Besides dropping by without calling first, the fact that they never coordinated their clothing was my first clue that something was amiss. âChange in plans,â Shawna said as she urged Jade inside, then surveyed the area behind the building as if theyâd been followed.
âChange in what plans?â I asked, closing the door. The last time Jade and I had talked, Iâd shared Coraâs idea and what little Iâd learned from my trip to the Classic Broom. Other than promising to share the information with Shawna, we hadnât discussed doing anything else.
After that, Iâd spent a busy afternoon taking care of customers in the shop and hoping Iâd hear back from Deeann, which I hadnât.
âHelping Cora, of course,â Shawna said, dropping her backpack on the floor, then plopping down on the couch. She reached over and pulled Barley from his favorite spot onto her lap.
âWhile we were discussing the situation, we realized we didnât have any suspects for Coraâs death,â Jade said as she settled into a kitchen chair across from where Iâd been sitting.
Shawna cleared her throat.
Jade rolled her eyes. âOkay, Shawnaâs the one who figured it out.â
âThank you,â Shawna said smugly.
âAnd,â Jade drew out the word. âSince time is of the essence, and we canât rely on Logan giving us informationââ
Shawna interrupted by saying, âWhich I think is wrong. Having a detective for a boyfriend should entitle you to special treatment.â
Those kinds of expectations had been known to strain relationships, even wreck them. âItâs because of our relationship that I donât want âspecial treatmentâ,â I said. Though, given the current circumstances, we could definitely use anything Logan uncovered. âI also donât want him to risk losing his job because he shared information he shouldnât have.â
Roy was a good sheriff with lots of integrity. I didnât think heâd let his family tie with Logan influence his decisions.
âOh,â Shawna said. âI hadnât thought of that.â
Other than a text to say âHelloâ and see how my day was going, I hadnât gotten an invite from Logan to have the talk heâd mentioned. Rather than add to my anxiety by discussing it further, I returned to my seat and changed the subject. âGetting back to what you were saying,â I said to Jade.
âRight.â She propped her elbows on the table. âHave you heard back from Deeann yet?â
âNo,â I said.
