Chapter Ten

After a long, exhausting day, I was tempted to go to bed early. Instead, I pulled out my laptop, hoping to do some online research into Cora’s death. I’d just changed out of my work clothes and into a baggy T-shirt and comfortable pair of sweats when I heard a knock on the door.

I hadn’t been expecting visitors and was surprised to find Shawna and Jade standing outside, similarly dressed in dark jackets and jeans. The only difference in their attire was the worn lime green backpack Shawna had hitched on her shoulder. A bag she’d gotten when she was twelve years old and had used to carry her books all the way through high school.

Besides dropping by without calling first, the fact that they never coordinated their clothing was my first clue that something was amiss. “Change in plans,” Shawna said as she urged Jade inside, then surveyed the area behind the building as if they’d been followed.

“Change in what plans?” I asked, closing the door. The last time Jade and I had talked, I’d shared Cora’s idea and what little I’d learned from my trip to the Classic Broom. Other than promising to share the information with Shawna, we hadn’t discussed doing anything else.

After that, I’d spent a busy afternoon taking care of customers in the shop and hoping I’d hear back from Deeann, which I hadn’t.

“Helping Cora, of course,” Shawna said, dropping her backpack on the floor, then plopping down on the couch. She reached over and pulled Barley from his favorite spot onto her lap.

“While we were discussing the situation, we realized we didn’t have any suspects for Cora’s death,” Jade said as she settled into a kitchen chair across from where I’d been sitting.

Shawna cleared her throat.

Jade rolled her eyes. “Okay, Shawna’s the one who figured it out.”

“Thank you,” Shawna said smugly.

“And,” Jade drew out the word. “Since time is of the essence, and we can’t rely on Logan giving us information—”

Shawna interrupted by saying, “Which I think is wrong. Having a detective for a boyfriend should entitle you to special treatment.”

Those kinds of expectations had been known to strain relationships, even wreck them. “It’s because of our relationship that I don’t want ‘special treatment’,” I said. Though, given the current circumstances, we could definitely use anything Logan uncovered. “I also don’t want him to risk losing his job because he shared information he shouldn’t have.”

Roy was a good sheriff with lots of integrity. I didn’t think he’d let his family tie with Logan influence his decisions.

“Oh,” Shawna said. “I hadn’t thought of that.”

Other than a text to say “Hello” and see how my day was going, I hadn’t gotten an invite from Logan to have the talk he’d mentioned. Rather than add to my anxiety by discussing it further, I returned to my seat and changed the subject. “Getting back to what you were saying,” I said to Jade.

“Right.” She propped her elbows on the table. “Have you heard back from Deeann yet?”

“No,” I said.
